Helping students to prepare for the workplace
Thebarton Senior College (RTO) delivers Certificates 2 and 3 in Business/Admin. The delivery is carried out within a Simulated Business (Simbus) with a Business mentor - Marino Uniforms. This organisation provides real business experience and expertise to the students studying this course. They have been our mentor for fifteen years with a change of ownership occurring thirteen years ago. The new owners were very keen to continue this involvement and further the growth of students' work experience and knowledge.
Our business mentor, Trisha Borgas from Marino Uniforms is one of the Directors who each semester hosts a visit from the students and provides a tour of their premises explaining their operations. The students have the opportunity to ask questions - not just about the business but topics such as - what qualities do you look for in an employee; how do you advertise; where do you source your materials etc.
In return Trisha and other Directors have visited the students at the college to observe how the students are working. Trisha has commented several times about the students' questions. They always give her something to think about, especially in the early days in regards to WHS. Most recently they enquired about job interviews and how she conducts them. This transferred to a visit from Trisha when she then generously spent over an hour providing her comments on her processes when checking resumes and questions she asks at interviews. On two occasions Trisha has been asked by the Simulated Business Community to be a guest speaker. The first time was at a national conference held in Adelaide speaking about her relationship with Thebarton and just recently she has agreed to speak at the Trade Fair of Simulated Businesses being held in September this year at Adelaide TAFE.
