Pythagoras may be credited with some immensely important mathematical discoveries in ancient times, but being a mathematical genius is definitely not a requirement to participate in the Pythagorean Club at TSC! The club, which meets on Wednesdays at lunchtime, is for anyone who enjoys puzzles and patterns. Students are welcome to participate in any session they like, without any need to commit to regular attendance. It is a place where students can settle back and get lost in an intriguing challenge, make new friends and even try mastering the Rubik's Cube with some expert tuition.
The club is very fortunate in having some regulars who are great peer tutors, including Ali, a long-standing participant and wonderful coach, Karen, who has shown fantastic determination in going from novice to recently mastering the Rubik's Cube, and Aston, an accomplished speedcuber, who now regularly participates and helps tutor other students. Aston has participated in 4 WCA (World Cube Association) competitions and is ranked in the top 200 in Australia in the 3x3 cube. In his main event, Skewb, he placed 11th at last year's national competition, with a 7.04 second average. So for all students, beginners or otherwise, who are interested in tackling this fascinating twisty puzzle, the Pythagorean Club is a great learning space.
The club has lots of other puzzle resources too, so students can easily find an absorbing challenge and try them in groups. In the process, they train their brains, learn that persevering pays off, and improve their problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills. These skills are so crucial in preparing themselves to face the challenges of their future education and work.
