ASC Shipbuilding Readiness Program
Thebarton VET students win 9 of 18 positions
ASC Shipbuilding Readiness Program
The future is looking bright for nine of our students who have secured places in the ASC Shipbuilding Readiness Program. The students have performed so outstandingly in their Certificate II in Engineering Pathways at Thebarton Senior College, they have won nine of the eighteen available positions as school-based engineering trainees in the inaugural program, which commenced in July.

Thebarton Senior College provides an extensive range of Vocational Education and Training courses and welcomes students from other secondary schools across the metropolitan area. Students complete their studies cross-institutionally, at both their home school and Thebarton. In fact, eight of the nine successful Thebarton candidates in this first intake are doing just that.

The successful candidates are Cooper of Thebarton Senior College, Austin and Oscar of Henley High, Damien of Blackwood High, James V of Springbank Secondary and Seth, James M, Isabella and Cullen of Urrbrae Agricultural High.

The vocational certificate at Thebarton Senior College and the partnership with ASC has helped the students feel more secure about the future. Cooper said "I feel excited and thankful. I feel confident about my future with ASC." He added "supportive teachers, counsellors and parents have helped overcome any challenges." Fellow student, Austin agreed "I feel excited about the future as this apprenticeship will set me up for life."

The course is providing alternative pathways to careers in the industry. Oscar said "I can relax about what I am going to do after year 12. I'm very excited to start work down there. I thought I was going to uni to study engineering."

ASC will be recruiting another 22 trainees in the second half of this year with a starting date of January 2021. If students are interested in being considered for a traineeship with ASC, they can enrol in our Certificate II in Engineering Pathways program, or the SACE Stage One subject Gateway 2 Trades.
