Design, Technology and Engineering - Material Solutions

SACE Stage 1

10 credits

Creative Accessories is a hands-on design course where students explore materials and techniques to create small wearable or decorative objects. Materials include polymer clay, copper wire, embroidery, and/or digital design tools for laser-cut acrylic and wood.

Students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by responding to design challenges at each stage, from concept development through to construction and refinement.

Projects may include earrings, pendants, charms, keyrings, ring dishes, wall hangings, sun catchers, and embroidered artworks. Students are encouraged to experiment, express their personal style, and explore the relationship between function and aesthetics.

Students complete three folios:
  • Two skills-based folios, focusing on the development of specific techniques using polymer clay and wire. In each, students investigate how artists use these materials and explore how to achieve particular styles or technical outcomes.
  • The final folio is the Design Process and Solution, where students employ a self-directed approach to create a themed collection of items through thorough research and experimentation.
They analyse artists' work, reflect on creative decisions, and select materials and techniques appropriate to their research and design goals.
