SACE Stage 2

20 credits

This subject explores how design contributes to personal expression and shapes broader social and cultural contexts. Students will engage in a self-directed design process, choosing their own focus area, techniques, and outcomes based on their interests.

While supported with scaffolds, guidance, and regular feedback, students are responsible for driving their own learning, making decisions about concept development, technical approaches, and creative direction. They will research and respond to the work of other designers, experiment with materials and techniques, and develop a body of work that reflects their individual style, values, and design thinking.

Course Content
Minor and Major Product
Students can choose to complete either:
  • two separate products (Minor and Major), each exploring a different concept or design direction
  • or
  • one in-depth product that allows for greater complexity, refinement, and development over time
In both approaches, students will research, generate ideas, draw inspiration from practitioners, experiment with materials, and document their full design process through to a final resolved outcome.

Inquiry
Students will investigate practitioners working within their design focus. They may choose to:
  • conduct an in-depth study of one designer?s creative process, techniques, and materials or
  • compare and contrast the creative approaches, methods, and visual outcomes of two designers
Practical Skills
Students will begin the course by exploring four separate skills, techniques, or processes related to their chosen design focus. For each, they will research relevant artists or practitioners, experiment with the technique, and demonstrate their understanding by developing a small resolved piece. Each skill is documented with visual and written reflections on process, challenges, and growth.
