Design, Technology and Engineering - Digital Communication Solutions

SACE Stage 2

20 credits

Students will develop their own photographic style through a series of technical and conceptual skill tasks.

Photography is a self-directed course where students use DSLR cameras and Adobe Photoshop to complete practical work and produce resolved images.

Students are supported with scaffolds and regular guidance, but the direction and subject matter of their work is self-chosen. They build skills through structured tasks, plan and produce a major photographic product, and investigate tools, materials, and issues relevant to their practice.

Photoshoots, research, and editing outside of class time are expected. This subject suits students who can work independently and manage a sustained project.

Specialised Skills Tasks
Students complete two skills-based folios, each focused on building and demonstrating technical knowledge in areas such as manual camera control, lighting, composition, and digital manipulation. Each folio includes photographic experiments, reflective analysis, and final resolved images.

Design Process and Product

  • Researching and analysing relevant photographers and techniques
  • Developing a concept suited to a target audience
  • Planning and refining image shoots and editing workflows
  • Documenting production processes and evaluating the final outcome
Resource Study
Part 1 - Resource Investigation
Students research and test photographic materials, tools, or techniques (eg camera settings, lenses, lighting gear, file types, or print materials), and report on their suitability for use in their own work.

Part 2 - Issues Exploration
