Science Alive 2021
Women in STEM
Science Alive 2021
On Friday 19 November, a group of students and teachers attended the Science Alive Women in STEM 2021 seminar at the Adelaide Showgrounds. The event is an exclusive invitation for female high school and tertiary students for an evening of presentations from leading female Scientists, Engineers and professionals from a diverse range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers.

The event was hosted by Professor Caroline McMillen (Chief Scientist for South Australia) and followed up with keynote speaker Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith, Australian Government Women in STEM Ambassador and Professor of Practice in Science Communication at the University of New South Wales.

Students also heard from leading scientists:
- Professor Alice Gorman, Associate Professor, Flinders University and leader in the field of Space Archaeology
- Dr Stephanie Lamont Friedrich, SA Account Manager/Business Development Manager for Government of South Australia, Energy and Natural Resources
- Miss Amy Stringfellow, Defence Scientist specialising in Cyberwarfare Research
- Ms Anna Lam, Lead Engineer at ASC
- Ms Melissa Weston, Lead Structural Engineer at ASC

The evening included Australia's largest immersive and interactive space experience, The Jarli Experience! Jarli is the story of a young indigenous woman inspired by STEM that sets out to uncover the mysteries of space. Students engaged with the interactive animation and explored space alongside Jarli through STEM technologies.

Our students had an amazing time and asked insightful questions of the speakers. They found the event valuable to hear about the applications of knowledge in STEM and had the opportunity to start their own networking journey.

The event was a great opportunity for our students to hear from female leaders in STEM and find out about new pathways into STEM-related fields. We look forward to continuing to support Women in STEM in 2022.
